Sea Games 2009: Singapore 2 - 2 Indonesia

Singapore to a scintillating 2-2 draw in the first match of Group B which was played at the Main Stadium of the National Sports Complex. With both teams already building up the tempo to the opening match since a week ago, the match started on a furious note with Indonesia the early aggressor with a Tony Sucipto free kick which sailed over the crossbar.

But Singapore’s gradual built up play saw them scoring the first goal off a Mohd Shaiful Esah Nain’s corner in the sixth minute which was headed into goal by defender Muhammad Safuwan. Jolted by the early goal, Indonesia tried to go forward through the hard work of strike pair Boaz Salossa and Engel Sani but they just can’t seem to get into the Singapore box often enough.

In the 24th minute, Indonesia fell further behind when Djayusman Triasdi curled the ball into the net to beat keeper Frenky Irawan for the second time in the afternoon. But there were no signs of desperation on the part of Indonesia as they trudged on despite of the heat to put pressure on their opponents.

And with just three minutes left of the first half, they finally cracked the Singapore defence when Stevie Bonsapia slammed home to the far post off a cross from Engel. The score at the break was 2-1 in favour of Singapore.

Indonesia started the second half stronger where in the 54th minute Boaz delivered a stinging free kick which went straight to Singapore custodian Chan Yu Hui.

But five minutes after the hour mark there was no escape for Yu Hui when off a curling corner from Rachmat Latif, the waiting Rendy headed in the equaliser.
